In honor of Samuel W Collins birth on this day in 1802 and to help close out Michael’s Collins Week @exploringaxehistory I thought I’d share my favorite Collins axe with you. It’s from the mid 19th century and is in remarkable condition, considering that it was salvaged from a shipwreck after 140 years and had been encrusted with Lake Michigan detritus including shells and pebbles basically cemented into the eye. It was likely being freighted as a new axe when the ship went down and was never used. An elegantly refined pattern for its age and made out of beautiful wrought iron. If you swipe through the photos you will see it has one of the most obvious and best examples of an inlaid bit that I have ever seen. Looking at the top, it is very apparent how it was constructed with the hardened steel bit inserted into the axe head and not wrapped over the top of the wrought iron. Thanks for looking! #collinsaxe #shipwreck #salvaged #wroughtiron
