One Family’s Changed Perceptions: "We had avoided Voyageurs because of the perception that unless we canoed, boated, or engaged in rugged camping it would not be a worthwhile trip for our family given our children’s limitations in terms of ages and abilities. However, this perception was not our reality. Welcoming staff helped us figure out accessible options that met our needs. We found that each of the park’s three visitor centers offered unique and worthwhile experiences. For our younger children, and those looking for engaging hands-on exploration, the Kabetogama Visitor Center exhibits were favorites. Rainy Lake Visitor Center offered wonderful historic and ecological interpretive displays that gave context to the park, while the sensory friendly space at the Ash River Visitor Center offered peace and solitude. We reached accessible trails by car and by tour boat. During our boat tour on Rainy Lake, we had an option to disembark on Little American Island. There a Ranger led us along a compacted crushed gravel trail where we learned about the island’s gold rush and geological histories. Our kids even got to touch 2.6 billion-year-old rock! We enjoyed trying to spot the northern lights and milky way in the dark sky park, and our children earned Night Sky Jr. Ranger patches along with the Voyageurs and Garden Explorer Jr. Ranger badges.
