#ICYMI On Sept. 9th, U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Commander Gen. Bryan Fenton and Command Sgt. Maj. Shane Shorter joined family and friends at a ceremony to celebrate the life of a great man, a legend, and the first @ussocom commander, Gen. James J. Lindsay. Lindsay served our country for 38 years and was recognized multiple times for his bravery and leadership in combat, earning our nation’s second highest honor for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. Congress envisioned a #SOF command with unprecedented acquisition authorities and the power to organize, train, and equip Special Operations Forces from across the joint services. Lindsay was unanimously confirmed as our first commander and was truly the right officer to be at the helm for such a critical time in our history. During his tenure, SOF participated in 570 exercises and operations in 69 countries, including Operation Earnest Will/Prime to stop the Iranians from attacking oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, Operation Just Cause in Panama, and Operation Promote Liberty aimed at rebuilding democracy in Panama. Lindsay passed away early last month, but his legacy remains in the unique capabilities and authorities that define SOCOM, the jointness of SOF operations, and the skilled maturity of today’s #SOF warriors.
