For most women, girls and nonbinary people around the world—violence is everywhere. But we don’t always realize exactly *how* common it is.⁠ ⁠ “The violence that women experience is so prevalent that it can take on this feeling of inevitability or mundane everyday-ness,” says Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and illustrator @monachalabi. In this illustration series, she puts the too-often accepted statistics for physical and sexual violence in context in an effort to “reawaken us to a number that is shocking, and should remain so.”⁠ ⁠ This data—taken from a landmark 2021 World Health Organization report—still vastly understates the problem, experts say, and excludes the disproportionate violence that trans women and nonbinary people face. And newer data shows that rates of violence around the world are getting worse, not better.⁠ ⁠ Why is this happening? And what can we do about it?
