Happy National Sober Day! I did not know this day existed until I saw it on @thee.sober.millennial I have been sober for 3 years and 8 months. Just typing that shocks me! Nearly 4 years have gone by since I decided to see what would happen if I stopped drinking. For those of you who aren’t familiar with my story, what happened was I lost 90 pounds, became a vegan and a minimalist, sold our home of 23 years and hit the road with my husband and dogs in an RV - full-time - to see the US and Canada. So quitting drinking kinda changed my life 😳 Outside of marrying my husband, it’s the best decision I have made in my 55 years. Are there downsides? Hell yes! I lost friends, I had to get to know my new self and mourn my old self, and I had to find new ways to celebrate, cope with stress, anger, sadness and anxiety. I continue to grow as a sober person and still find it awkward at times in this alcohol-focused world. But on a whole, it’s an amazing experience to go through life clearheaded 100% of the time. While I don’t post about my sobriety journey here anymore, since this account has morphed into a travel diary, I do miss writing about it. It is such an enormous part of my life and yet I don’t think about it all the time like I used to. I don’t count days or even months now.
