Alley Leto always thought blood transfusions were only used for extreme cases, until the day she needed four blood transfusions herself. The Houston lifestyle blogger was on a trip in Lake Geneva, WI, enjoying zip lining, canoeing and other activities when she woke up one morning and realized she was hemorrhaging. She put a towel in between her legs and immediately went back home to seek care closer to her family. Alley was admitted to the hospital for one week and received four blood transfusions to stabilize her hemoglobin levels. “I was just a normal person living my life, traveling, and the next thing you know, I wake up and I'm hemorrhaging and I'm in a hospital for a week,” Alley said. “If I didn't have blood transfusions, I wouldn't be here right now and I wouldn't be able to see my kids. I was on bed rest for two months. I had an oxygen machine just to kind of help pump oxygen to my organs. It was quite the ride, but I always say, ‘I wish I could say thank you to my donors. Those are four people that just one day decided to become a donor and they have no idea how they changed my life.’” To this day, she and her care team do not know what caused her to hemorrhage, but if there’s one thing she does know, it’s the importance of blood donations. “You don't realize the importance of it until you're in that position and you need that blood,” Alley said. “You're praying that someone with your blood type took the time to give blood. That's when you really value the importance of blood donations. It can happen to anyone, no matter what age, no matter your health, whether you work out or not.
