This month marks 53 years since the start of Black September, a series of armed confrontations between the Jordanian monarchy led by King Hussein and the Palestine Liberation Organization led by Yasser Arafat. During Black September, King Hussein sought to neutralize the threat to his power by eliminating the presence of Palestinian revolutionaries in Jordan, who had begun calling for the overthrow of the monarchy, while also using Jordan as a major base of operations for the liberation of Palestine. Over the course of 11 days, the Palestinian resistance in Jordan was crushed and over 3,400 Palestinians were killed. The Hashemite monarchy’s harsh crackdown on the Palestinian resistance ultimately resulted in the ouster of the Palestinian Liberation Organization from Jordan, forcing them to relocate to Lebanon. The significance of Black September was eliminating a critical front for the Palestinian resistance, namely, the popular cradle and geographic base of Jordan. Half a century onward, we condemn the continued complicity of the Jordanian state in its collaboration with the Zionist entity at all levels, along with all reactionary Arab regimes that continue down the path of normalization. We know as well as Israel knows that the end of the monarchy in Jordan would greatly diminish the Zionist entity’s chances for continued survival. By extension, we recognize that the path to a free Palestine is intertwined with and inseparable from the struggle for liberation from all reactionary Arab regimes in the region. #BlackSeptember #FreePalestine
