Title: Portrait of a Lady (Madame de Glรฉon? (c. 1760)) Artist: Jean-Baptiste Grueze Style: Portraiture FYI: Gruezeโs portrait depicts a young woman wearing a blue silk cape, painted half-length, and looking out of a stone window. Decorated on her fashionably powdered gay hair are pearls and blue silk flowers. This style was known as tรชte de moutonโ (โsheepโs headโ) and was popular in France in the 1750s. The decorations in her hair were called โpompomsโ after Madame de Pompadour (who popularized the style). Her cape is lined with brow fur and has a gathered hood that lays over her shoulders. Underneath is a white dress decorated with lace and a large white bow. Protecting her from the chill is a light beige cloth draped over the stone ledge. The strange pose of the woman at a stone window may have been influenced by โGirl at a Windowโ by Rembrandt. The painting was in Paris during the 18th century until it was brought to London in the late 1770s. The chips and cracks on the stone ledge suggest that he knew of this device in the works of 17th-century Dutch artists. The lady might be Geneviรจve-Charlotte-Agnรจs Savalette, a writer and actress in amateur theatricals. The relaxed appearance and gaze toward something or someone outside of the picture suggest an informality that appeared in French portraiture around the 1750s. ๐คGeneviรจve performed theatricals at the chรขteau de La Chevrette, home to writer Madame Louise dโรpinay, a wealthy patron of the writer Rousseau. . . ๐๏ธโ๏ธDo you like it? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #18thCenturyFashion #XVIIICentury #NationalGalleryLondon #18thCenturyArt #XVIIIeSiรจcle #18thCenturyDress #1700s #1760s #EighteenthCentury #XVIII #PortraitPaintings ๐ทNational Gallery, London ๐โJean-Baptiste Greuze, Portrait of a Lady (Madame de Glรฉon?).โ Jean-Baptiste Greuze | Portrait of a Lady (Madame de Glรฉon?) | NG5584 | National Gallery, London, www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/jean-baptiste-greuze-portrait-of-a-lady-madame-de-gleon.
