Not the learning of a new skill, not the growth of the physical body, not movement of the body in space, not the stock market, not the amount of storage space in the next generation of phones - what phenomenon develops linearly? In movement of the body, the idea of straight lines can be helpful - but a closer examination shows that even straight is not straight, that it exists only as a virtual concept. What do you feel as spiraling in the “straight line” of a push up? What is defined as ‘purely’ coronal, hides within it sagittal and transversal as well. What do you feel rotating left and right or moving / tilting forward and back when you step your feet from side to side? How many sessions did it continue the last time that you progressed from 1 rep on session 1, 2 reps on session 2, 3 reps on session 3 - and what happened after? It takes merely a little zoom in, zoom out, fast forward or rewind, in order to see that non linearity is the actual. On the level of programming and periodization, pathways of the body, learning, etc - there are curves, seeming regressions, shocks, and spirals that not only happen, but are NECESSARY. Linearity is the virtual, while non linearity is the reality. What are some implications? -If you can’t feel non-linearity / 3 planes of movement, there is a blind spot in your perception of sensation. Feel doesn’t mean visualize, comprehend intellectually, mentally verbalize, but to actually FEEL. -Working with well defined repeatable linear patterns has the benefit of quantifiable progress; working with less outwardly linear and less repetitive patterns (but lots of reps) has the benefit of a more adaptable organism. -Seemingly linear progress that is expected to continue as such forever without changing anything will soon be revealed as logarithmic (plateau) or even to regress after some time. -Processes / ‘prescriptions’ that are copy and pasted from one person to another in different timelines and contexts will have different effects. #movement #movementpractice #linear #nonlinear #organicstrength #triplanar #somatic
