When you do things yourself, you are taking a risk. You might make an absolute mess of it. It may or may not be salvageable. You might feel like a failure or feel like you’ll disappoint someone. When you leave it to others, you are taking a risk. They might screw it up. It may or may not be on accident. They may or may not tell you that they did. You can’t control whether anyone else will take responsibility for what they do. When you do things yourself, you are taking responsibility. You may be taking a risk in gaining new skills by trial and error, but you are ensuring that no corners are cut. There are so many things a homemaker needs to be mindful of when it comes to what we do ourselves and what we leave to others. It’s a big reason many of us value our homemaking craft so much; we are taking responsibility for our homes. Making our own food so we know what’s in it. Making our own household products so we know we aren’t poisoning homes. Raising and educating your own children. These are the thoughts rolling through my mind as I look at this batch of sourdough bagels that are supposed to be rising, but… they’re not looking too hot. I tried making them 75% whole grain and the dough is a bit on the dry side. Oh well. If they don’t turn out, they can become breadcrumbs. Oh, I guess that’s another upside to doing things yourself. When you make your own mistakes, you can make the most of them and learn from them.
