With big storms and devastating storm surges often results in all of us on the coast to confront the challenge of plastic consumption and waste. The rest of the time the reminder is subtle rather than visceral and we don't often consider what it looks further inland where service delivery is not the biggest reality. The Ohlanga river is one such an example. A fair chunk of waste is trapped by a cane road bridge about 7km upriver. The Litterboom Project successfully cleaned this area a few times in the past. Currently there is very little waste trapped at the bridge itself. However, the story does not stop nor start here. Follow the river another 10-odd kilometers upstream and you are met with devastation. You will find the big bridge in this photo essay as you cross from Shastri Park into Amaotana; from a serviced area into an unserviced area. The oHlanga river is a mess, the side streams all blocked up and heavily polluted and living conditions distinctly sub-par. This is the real story of plastic that has an extremely limited and short-lived window of use. This is what convenience looks like.
