Someone messaged me this week asking why I am not “honest” about how hard sobriety is. It stopped me dead in my tracks and made me realize how many people feel stuck in an outdated version of their own sobriety. There is no doubt that staying sober in a booze obsessed world is hard af. I don’t take for granted that for many it is life vs death on a daily basis. Still, there should be joy. Sobriety should feel empowering, you should feel capable and strong. You deserve to be celebrated for the work you’ve done to live a more purposeful and connected life. If your current environment is telling you otherwise it might be time to reevaluate. I’ve found that a lot of the messages I receive like the one I got this week are rooted in deep fear and I understand that! Maybe when you got sober the community you found yourself in positioned your sobriety as an outcome of consequence instead of a powerful choice. Maybe you are letting some people in your life anchor you to an outdated narrative of yourself. You are allowed to evolve! Your sobriety is allowed to evolve! You deserve to find joy and deep happiness on this journey. Sobriety is HARD AF…but so is drinking away your mental health and creativity.
