It’s so easy for us to say, “Just take the blindfold off,” or “Just open your eyes.” But in doing so, we’re invalidating this person’s true experience. They’re terrified. They truly feel like there is no way out. It reminds me of the story behind Carl Jung’s work with the term Synchronicity...​​​​​​​​⁣​​​​​​​​ Jung was working with a patient in the 1920's who was having difficulty experiencing and expressing her emotional world. She was stuck in a pattern of high intellectualization. In one of their sessions, she was describing a dream she had about a scarab beetle and while she was recounting the dream, Jung heard a tapping at his window. He got up and found a beetle very similar to the scarab beetle described by his patient – which for the time and area of Switzerland he was in would have been rare. He grabs the beetle, hands it to his patient and says something to the effect of, “Here’s your beetle.” The patient – shocked by the intense synchronicity of the event ended up having a deep break through after that – which transformed the work Jung was able to do with her.​​​​​​​​ ​​​​​​​​ This shows the true power of synchronicity – sometimes we need a shock to our system, an “awe” experience, before we can move through something so difficult.
