🍂 Today is the first day of autumn. Even though over 50% of Munch’s art are of landscape and nature, why don’t we think of him as a landscape artist? 🤔 🧑🎨 In Munch's art, the landscape runs like a red thread throughout his entire oeuvre. During his career, he explored different ways of representing nature. 🎨 It begins with the young and inexperienced artist's detailed studies and continues up to the accomplished painter's self-assured, playful compositions. During the years 1899-1902, he created a series of paintings in which a dark and threatening spruce forest looms under a dark blue sky. Munch explored nature motifs and the landscape genre in order to question humankind's place in a cosmic cycle of life, and to celebrate the beauty of the elements as well as nature's transformative powers. Although climate change was not common knowledge at the end of the 19th century, it was during this period that the concept of ecology was formed, and scientists conducted the first measurements of CO2's impact on the atmosphere. We don't know whether Munch was aware of this, but we do know that he was interested in weather and natural phenomena. 🖼️ Elm Forest in Autumn / Autumn in the Elm Forest, 1919–1920.
