ALCOHOL AND WOMENβS HEALTH π·(swipe for more) Iβve on many occasions been the one that stands out at a party because I would not be having a drink. The constant pestering of others with the infamous question βare you pregnant?β has made me want to explain once and for all why I choose not to drink (as much). π€·ββοΈ Donβt get me wrong, I do looove the occasional margarita or a funky natural wine, but I have accepted over time that alcohol does not sit right with me at all. And thatβs totally fine. I am sorry to say, but alcohol is not our friend when it comes to healing hormones (and of course general health). And for someone like me who is strongly susceptible to PMS, anxiety and other menstrual cycle issues, it is not a good idea. ππ» Alcohol can contribute to hormonal imbalance and increase inflammation. It impairs your liversβ ability to metabolise or detoxify estrogen, resulting in estrogen excess. Even one drink per day can increase your blood level of estrogen. This means heavier period, PMS symptoms, more menstrual cramping, and puts you at greater risk of breast cancer compared to nondrinkers. ππ» On top of that, it contributes to insulin resistance, damages gut bacteria, prevents nutrient absorption, impairs detoxification, and interferes with progesterone's soothing effects (hello PMS). Regular alcohol intake is associated with endometriosis, increased risk of developing PCOS, fertility problems, uterine fibroids and more severe menopausal symptoms. Reducing your alcohol consumption will go a long way towards supporting your hormone balance and improving your menstrual cycles. Of course, you can enjoy a drink every now and then, but pay close attention to how you feel the next day and observe your symptoms. Puffy face? Irritable? Low energy? Mood swings?β¦π€ It saddens me that we are in a society where we constantly have to justify ourselves for not drinking. I am of course judging no one! But I choose my happiness, my energy, my productivity and my long-term health over it all π #womenshealth #hormonebalance #pms #menstrualcycle #endometriosis #guthealth #inflammation #anxiety #sisterhoodnutrition #pcos
