Since my first visit to @cascinadellerose in July โ21, subsequent releases have received increasingly greater praise (including 100pts from KOโK), making the minuscule production even more difficult to buy. This success is not surprising. @sobri.cdr has worked hard at the winery, and in building public relations. Meanwhile, youโll rarely visit the winery and not find @davidesobrino toiling in the vineyard, which are a picture of vitality.ย In 1948, Riccardo and Davideโs great grandparents purchased a summer house, including landholdings in Rio Sordo. In the beginning, a local family farmed the 5.5ha estate on a sharecropping basis (mezzadria). Following the great grandparents death, ownership passed to their children, who also had no desire to farm the inherited land. Fortunately, by 1984, their daughter, Giovanna had saved enough money to purchase her parentโs property and by 1992 had released her first Barbaresco. In 2007, her husband left his job in the city to join his wife. Today, their children Davide and Riccardo manage the estate.ย In the vineyard, the families work is meticulous. Vines are pruned to Guyot Poussard, which is believed to improve vine health amongst other things. Revised farming practices have also induced lower yields. Thankfully, Giovanna also abolished herbicides many years ago. In the winery, fermentation is spontaneous and takes place in either steel or concrete. Depending on vintage conditions, maceration takes places over 30-35 days. Pumpovers are gentle, starting after 2-3 days followed by one pumpover a day until fermentation nears completing. Following this, there is a very gentle pneumatic pressing to reduce the requirement for filtration. In 2016, the brothers also experimented with submerged cap. Wines are then aged in oak vessels of varying sizes (including foudre). The recent cellar extension also provides greater humidity and a naturally lower ambient temperature.ย The resulting wines are a superb example of contemporary Barbaresco.
