It was great to taste the first release of Burzi’s newest single-vineyard Barolo with the effervescent @caterinaburzi at the family’s recently-renovated winery and tasting room in La Morra. It’s been quite interesting to see Burzi’s popularity grow these past two years since @ultravino suggested I speak to Caterina and Alberto. The wines themselves are polished, broad and consistent each vintage. Despite a handful of respectable producers farming vines in La Serra, the vineyard has hitherto remained reasonably unknown (besides perhaps Roberto Voerzio’s bottling). The 17ha vineyard is just south of La Morra and is nestled amidst Boiolo, Brunate, Cerequio, Casa Nere, and Fossati—a mixture of better and lesser-known vineyards. Alberto planted his east-facing (420-450m asl) parcel in 2013 and made his first vintage in 2019. Pre and post planting, the family have had to tackle the presence of large boulders (‘La Morra conglomerates) scattered throughout the plot. Despite intense clearing, Caterina tells me they’re still digging rocks from rows almost every year. Besides this, the vineyard is not so difficult to manage, the silty soil retains sufficient water, vegetation is strong and vigorous and grapes grow well. Cover crop grows spontaneously in some rows and is supplemented annually to achieve a more homogenous coverage. Due to its altitude and cool exposure, the vineyard is always one of the last to be picked, and will surely thrive in warmer vintages. #barolo #lamorra #burzi #nebbiolo
