If you've joined us post-Pride, hello! We're glad you're here. Here's a little bit about us: The 519 is Canada's most prominent 2SLGBTQ+ community centre in Toronto's Church and Wellesley neighbourhood, more fondly called The Village. We've been around since 1976, responding to the most pressing needs of all 2SLGBTQ+ people and the broader community. We're also a City of Toronto agency and registered charity with 84 employees. Hundreds of thousands of people enter our doors every year looking for friends, settlement support, or a place that affirms and supports their transition. From toddlers to older adults, refugees and newcomers to trans and non-binary people, everyone belongs at The 519. We work to be a place where one can be themselves, have their needs met, engage in brave conversations, and thrive. But it isn't always rainbows and sunshine. It's also about putting in the hard work to ensure nobody is left behind. That looks like holding space for everyone — their lived experiences, grief, joy, and intersecting realities. Part of that work includes advocating daily for action addressing systemic issues across Toronto and the country that create homelessness, poverty, discrimination, and so much more — issues that impact the communities we serve, that we have served from the beginning, and that we will continue to serve. Amidst it all, we need to find and celebrate moments of queer joy! We continue to grow with the community and respond to their issues with the same mandate that's guided us from the beginning. In a pamphlet about The 519 from 1988, our former Executive Director Kyle Rae said, "By providing space and support for all the diverse interests and needs of the North Jarvis area, we keep our community united and strong."
