October 1 is the International Day of Older Persons, celebrating the wisdom and contributions of older individuals while shedding light on issues affecting them. Many of the hard-won rights we enjoy today were fought for by 2SLGBTQ+ older adults during their youth. Growing up, they did not have the role models and support systems we all deserve. They lost loved ones to the AIDS crisis. Many of them were outed and put in danger after the bathhouse raids. Despite everything, they said, "Enough is enough," demanding respect and dignity. In many ways, we’re seeing history repeat itself. Our rights and existence continue to be challenged, but our 2SLGBTQ+ elders have conquered hate before. We can learn from each other, generation to generation, on the path to victory — together. We've come a long way but must remember not to leave 2SLGBTQ+ seniors behind. They continue facing unique challenges, including the lack of affirming health care, social isolation, and discrimination based on age, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, and abilities. The resulting stigma often impacts their access to critical, life-saving supports. The 519 addresses these unique challenges through drop-in programming, skill-sharing, social activities, outings, workshops, meal programs, and more. 2022 saw 1,650+ visits to our older adults programs, highlighting the need for community and connection among 2SLGBTQ+ seniors.
