The Bandit Queens is about the power of female friendship set in India. Meet Geeta, thought to be a murderer, when her husband, Ramesh, unexpectedly disappears from the village. Everyone is avoiding her. But she stays connected to a small group of women in her loan lending group. After five years, Geeta becomes more involved with them as they urge Geeta to kill their husband. Β It's unlike anything I've ever read, and I had a great time learning more about Indian culture. The book takes on some tough topics of Indian culture, including caste systems, gender, religion, and local politics. Besides it also touches on domestic abuse, sexual assault, and alcoholism. In my opinion, the author did a great job tackling all these complex topics, and I enjoyed how reading this book provided me with some understanding of Indian culture and society. The writing is also casual and quite fun despite the serious subjects being discussed. Besides, I liked witnessing Geeta develop a close relationship with the other women and how they could simultaneously take charge of their lives and marriage despite all the odds against them. I loved watching women growing together, as it was the right action. Geeta's role model in the book was Phoolan Devi, the real Bandit Queen, and I searched more about Phoolan Devi. She has an amazing story herself and could see how she can be an inspiration to Geeta. The premise, the character growth, and the relationships were beautiful to watch though the story did not consistently hold my attention. It becomes slow, and the narration becomes repetitive halfway through the book. I was starting to become bored, but thankfully the final scene of the women executed perfectly, and the ending also made this book worth it. Overall, The Bandit Queens is a good story of women's power and friendship; with every twist and turn, you learn much about Indian culture and society. Unfortunately, some parts felt a little flat for me, though I did enjoy the ending, and it was an exciting read.
