1 week to go till Idaho’s opening day! The first tag is my ensurance tag…meaning I’m going to use it to ensure I have elk meat in the freezer 😝‼️ The meat is a MAJOR priority to me so I’m generally not picky when I have multiple tags like this year. Sure I’d love to arrow 3 studs, but elk hunting is so much more different for me than other hunts. The general success rate with a bow is only 6%, I would guess it’s significantly lower on the public grounds I hunt. So it’s very real that a number of factors could leave your freezer empty from extreme hunting pressure, other recreational activities, sheep grazing, weather, and even wildfires. Sometimes elk are non existent in week 1 in a specific area, then the next week they are prolific in that same drainage on week 3. I’ve been fortunate to tag out on multiple tags for the past 5 or 6 years, but it’s come down the last day several times, especially if you’re being super picky. Aside from all of that…it is the desire for the time in the mountains that burns in my soul. We only get so many falls, and none of us know how many we have…my encouragement to you, especially as tags become more difficult to find and more people move into the West. Go with a friend to cut expenses. Borrow gear if you have too. CO and OR offer over the counter tags still (I’d be willing to bet those laws will change in the next 2 to 3 years). Utah has spike only hunts available and I believe some general tags that do get a TON of pressure. And I’m sure several states have cow tags in some areas. Washington and Oregon are facing major threats legislatively. And if the extreme liberals get their way, we will lose access on public lands and the ability to manage wildlife through hunting as it always has been. I’m not left or right politically, I just favor common sense. And that seems to be a rare trait amongst people these days, especially politicians. So don’t say things like, “maybe next year”, or “someday”. If you can’t do it this year, make a plan for next year. Next fall is NEVER promised! #elk #elkhunting #elkhunt #elkcountry #bowhuntingelk #bowhunting #publicland #publicland #publiclandowner #conservation
