Red flag infant sleep advice: infant's cry can be differentiated between a need and a want. Needs: hunger, thirst, clean diaper. Want: want to be cuddled, want the parent to stay with them till falling asleep. Reality: an infant's cry always communicates a need. Needs: hunger, thirst, clean diaper, want to be cuddled (attachment need), want a parent to stay with them til falling asleep (attachment need). The advice that an infant's cry can be differentiated between a need and a want is blind to attachment. You will notice that all cries labeled as "wants" will require your presence. How convenient, isn't it? Sadly, the advice is attachment-ignorant. In this society obsessed with independent infant sleep, it is easier to interpret and dismiss attachment behavior than face the reality that infant's have needs day and night. Whether we want to accept it or not, the reality remains that infant's have attachment needs (primarily through the senses) irrespective of the time of the day that can only be met by the attachment figure(s) in the infant's life.
