Last chance to see Nora Thompson Dean: Lenape Teacher and Herbalist in the historic library! Born and raised in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Nora Thompson Dean (1907–1984) was a member of the Delaware Tribe of Indians and a Lenape traditionalist who dedicated her life to preserving Lenape culture and language. The Lenape (or Delaware) are the original inhabitants of the land that now encompasses New Jersey and sections of New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut. From the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, European settlers forced the Lenape from their lands through deceit, violence, broken treaties, and the depredations of disease and famine. This physical displacement was accompanied by deliberate attempts to destroy Lenape culture. Dean sought to preserve all that she could of Lenape life, from its language to its spiritual beliefs and practices to its knowledge of the natural world. Her legacy inspires many, including the Lenape Center, who helped organize this presentation. Working toward its mission of “continuing Lenapehoking, the Lenape homeland, through community, culture, and the arts,” the center “push[es] back against our erasure and seed[s] the ground with Lenape consciousness for the next generations.” The Garden installation will be open through the end of October! __ Nora Thompson Dean.
