Ferdinand Hodler’s combination of realism, expressionism, and eroticism in his depictions of the female nude, as exemplified here, was a key influence on early twentieth-century Austrian artists, notably Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele. A version of Day appeared in the important 1904 Secession exhibition in Vienna, which featured thirty-one paintings by Hodler and was critical in establishing his international reputation.
