Traumatic experiences are difficult and horrible. It’s something that’s hard to forget even if you try. However they don’t have to define WHO you are or what your life will become 💜 Experts claim that the increased number of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is associated with poor health, addiction, and incarceration, just to name a few contributing factors. Right now, you may be thinking about a traumatic situation that you’ve experienced and how it has played a role in your own emotional and mental development. 3 ways to not let a traumatic experience define you but instead EMPOWER you ⬇️ 💜 Focus on acknowledging your feelings- the bad ones are just as important to notice as the good ones. Feelings serve as a function - ask yourself what could my feeling be telling me? 🤔 Your feelings are valid and important even if you’re the only one to acknowledge them. 💜 Learn about traumatic responses and how they can show up or be triggered by something. For a lot of people, traumatic experiences can cause them to avoid things; not only due to the event but also how their physical body responds. Don’t ignore that when it comes up. Every day your body is talking to you, don’t be afraid to ask “what do you need today?” You can place your hands over your throat (voice/choice), your stomach (look into the gut/brain connection), your shoulders (sometimes you might feel the weight of the world on you), etc. Different things will work for different people but try grounding techniques and learn about the fight, flight or freeze responses that might show up in your body. 💜 Have compassion for yourself - I’m going to say this bluntly but kindly: you didn’t sign up to go through what you went through or saw. You had no idea how the event, situation or person was going to impact you. Don’t stay in the “shoulda, coulda, woulda;” as it can add to the struggle of negative rumination. Instead have compassion, tell yourself “I’m not going to let this define me” and know it takes time to heal. And that’s good enough to start. Want more informative posts like this?
