Superba eleganza…! The 3500GT was an important model for Maserati, as it was the first road car built in relatively large volumes. (1972 GT from 1957 to 1964 by Touring and 441 GTI (Iniezione = injection) between 1961 to 1964.) In 1957, Maserati had officially withdrawn from car racing and her focus was now on the production of Gran Turismo cars. The elegant Design of the 3500GT was a creation of Carrozzeria Touring, whose Superleggera patent used aluminum panels wrapped on a thin tubular steel frame that described the shape of the bodywork. The 6-cylinder in-line engine, characterizes an excellent torque delivery at low rpm, it derived from the 1956 racing 350S. In 1961, Weber triple carburetors were replaced with a Lucas mechanical injection system, increasing the power to 235 hp in the 3500GTI. ZF provided the 4 speed gearbox (5 speed since 1960 and 3 speed automatic on demand), while the other components were purchased from the best Italian suppliers of the time. The 3500 GT and GTI achieved great commercial success, establishing the Maserati as one of the most exclusive high-performance automotive brands in the world. The 1961 injection version of the 3500GT, received some small external aesthetic modifications: a lower roof line, a longer snuse, a shallower lower-deep front radiator grille, rectangular front turn signals replaced by small and round, removed front fog lights, redesigned rear headlights and rear quarters added to the doors.
