For #NationalWildernessMonth, DYK, the Wilderness Act uses the phrase “wilderness character” four times, and it turns out this phrase is central to understanding the meaning of federally designated wilderness! Wilderness character combines biophysical, experiential, and symbolic ideals that distinguish wilderness from other lands. Through this lens, people and wilderness are interconnected. These ideals combine to form a complex and subtle set of relationships between the land, its management, and the meanings people associate with wilderness. Wilderness character includes intangible qualities like a sense of adventure, inspiration, or relaxation and five tangible qualities associated with the biophysical environment. These qualities apply to all wilderness areas, including the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness in Everglades National Park – the largest designated wilderness east of the Rocky Mountains.
