This year we are growing three ancient varieties of heritage cereals for the first time. Einkorn, is a natural original wheat grown by the first farmers of fertile land more than 10,000 years ago. It bakes flavourful cakes, muffins, cookies, and scones. Emmer, an ancient wheat grain dates back 17,000 years, it is a wholegrain wheat prized as a natural prolific crop, sweet nutty flavour, and ideal for pasta. Spelt, similar to Emmer but much younger in age (5000BC) is a grain closely related to wheat, but it’s not actually a wheat. It is more fragile and more water soluble which makes it easier to digest. After a wet summer, we finally had a dry spell and were able to harvest the grains on 24th August. We planted 15 acres and harvested 1.5 ton per acre. A good result for organically grown wheat given the weather conditions. The grains have been sent for quality testing, and we are awaiting the results. If successful, they will be milled into flour for our artisan bakers and for our customers to purchase in our farmshops. #daylesfordorganic #daylesfordfarm
