Why do people still commission portraits? When photography was invented many people thought it would replace realistic art in general, and portraiture in particular. That was one of the reasons which contributed to the loss of interest in classical representational painting, and triggered the development of modern art movements in the late 19th - early 20th century. But we are now in 2023 and the interest is still strong, which makes it possible for artists like me to be in demand, do what they love and earn a living. What makes someone want a hand-painted portrait when they can hire a photographer or take a photo themselves? Please share your thoughts in comments!
