My cousin came over today and met baby Millie. Kenzie was out on the deck listening to the Backstreet Boys and playing with a toy. After the album wrapped up, she sauntered inside and stood beside me. I leaned over while feeding baby sister and kenzie rested her head on top of mine. We like to do this - touch for a few seconds to say hello. I asked her if she was hungry and signed food, to which she lit up, and signed back, crackers. We laughed and went into the kitchen to get them, then I set her up with some T swift vibes on the couch. My cousin smiled and said “you two have the most amazing communication.” I. Am. Beaming. We have worked so hard, kenzie and I, to understand each other. To wrap our hands around what communication means for us, and make it as ordinary as anything. We are in a sunny moment of time where it feels easy to ‘chat’ with her, where I spend more time knowing, then I do wondering. Where she and I can use our eyes to say a thousand things, where spaces of quiet make the most noise. And then, to have someone witness our easy exchange, and celebrate it for the triumph that it is…. Well. It makes me feel like she and I are doing a good job at showing the world around us, how magical different can be. Breadcrumbs.
