these gorgeous ochre, indigo & other botanical pigments were made by visual artist, educator & researcher @lucillejunkere (first two pics courtesy of lucille), who will be a participant in @wildpigmentproject’s upcoming lecture/conversation series, PIGMENTS AS CATALYSTS, which starts september 22nd. lucille’s talk will focus on ‘healing and cultural reclamation through pigments.’ the date for the series has been pushed ahead a couple times for some juicy reasons (tba!), but i wanted to share this new fast-approaching date with you so you can get excited, & even, perhaps, register (link in bio), if you’d like. our first speaker will be visual artist hannah chalew — @studio.hnnh.chlw ( all following pics). she’ll speak on, “Insurgent Pigments: Engaging with Animate Materiality for a Livable Future." she’s doing incredible work with ‘plasticane’ paper, which she makes by hand out of bagasse, a waste product of the sugar cane industry, combined with bits of shredded single-use disposable plastic waste. she describes this process as “connecting the legacies of how we have extracted and exploited people and landscape from the time of enslavement (sugarcane was a chattel slavery crop in Louisiana) with how we continue to mistreat people and environment in our petrochemical age (plastic refining is a major industry in Cancer Alley today).” hannah also makes lake pigments with goldenrod gathered on industrial sites, and works with foraged coal run-off as a black pigment. she’ll talk about her radical pigment research and transformative collaborations with life forms of all kinds. you can read much more about @studio.hnnh.chlw’s palette-remediating processes at the wild pigment project PIGMENT PEOPLE DIRECTORY, which hannah has just joined (also linked in bio), and which lists 60+ pigment professionals all over the world. i can’t wait to launch the PIGMENTS AS CATALYSTS (for action! healing! & decolonization!) series this september….will you be there?? mark your calendars :) have an idea for a talk? dm me! #wildpigments #naturalpigments #insurgentpigments #pigmentsascatalysts #pigmentpeople
