toxic but beautiful CONDUCTOR BLUE (so-named by wondrous lucy mayes of @londonpigment) has THREE artist-contributors: @londonpigment, @torontoinkcompany, & @catalina.christensen. more on toxicity below.. here’s catalina… @catalina.christensen’s studio work is pigment-rich: she’s been foraging for minerals, and playing with copper’s relationship with acids for several years. her 11.21 GB contribution was a soft beautiful violet hematite called ATYBAN MAGUE, whose 22% went to @suagagua & the conservation of sacred Muisca-Heritage natural sanctuaries. it’s a delight to behold the subtle range of copper blues in her contribution to this month’s pigment! she writes: “Catalina’s interest in Verdigris started when she was living in Copenhagen. The city has many buildings with roofs and spirals covered in copper which oxidizes over time, especially near the sea where salts in the air produce copper sulphate, protecting the surface.” catalina has been able to achieve a really stunning range of blues and greens through her work with coppers. speaking personally, i, @tilkeelkins have been a little wary of copper-based pigments. the salts produced during the oxidization process are toxic…but many artists enjoy these blues, & engage them. as a forager working primarily with waste-stream pigments, verdigris is one of the few available blues — feral indigos, blackberry-with-iron, & waste-stream vivianite a few others: name yr favs in the comments if you like. these copper scraps, if unused, will eventually sometimes oxidize on their own anyway — so what does it mean to nudge them along in that direction? questions, for each of us to answer for ourselves. :) care should always be taken when making verdigris (full ventilation, gloves, masks). when/if this pigment comes your way, avoid touching the dry powder or breathing in the dust. keep in its little glassine pouch or store in a sealed container and if you want to paint with it get it wet (or oily) right away to eliminate dust risk. beguiling copper-process pics & artwork from @catalina.christensen (& 1st baggie array pic by me). #wildpigments #verdigris #groundbright #pigmentpeople
