Everyone wants to jump higher, that’s obvious! But how people go about it isn’t always the most intelligent approach I often see people get stuck in the same pattern when it comes to trying to improve their vertical jump, The first is they do excessive plyometric work. They fall victim to the mindset I order to jump high I have to jump more. The second is those who think Olympic lifting is the best possible way for everyone to increase their vertical jump. The real answer is likely that neither is optimal. We have discussed why excessive plyo metrics likely won’t improve your vertical jump in a meaningful way long term, but what about Olympic lifting or Olympic lifting variations. Although Olympic lifting can be a great way to develop power for some athletes, in my experience the technical aspects involved in completing the lift often limit the athletes ability to master, progress and ultimately get the most out of these patterns. As a result for the majority of athletes, alternatives to Olympic lifting might be the best option for developing power, and translating that onto the court. With low technical execution standards lifts like: -hex bar jump -hex bar power pull - med ball reverse toss - med ball scoop toss may represent better patterns for athletes to more effectively develop power. As always the pattern has to fit the athlete. That’s why I take great pride in developing 100 percent personalized training plans for volleyball athletes.
