“To me, it’s not the middle of nowhere; as I said, it’s the center of the world, and it’s basically because I like the land and I like to be here. A rancher once said to someone who once criticized his piece of land which was very barren – you know, asked him why he had it – he said he had it and he liked it because it held the world together.” In August of 1991, Donald Judd purchased a two-story building located on Highland Avenue in downtown Marfa, formerly a general store. He renovated the ground floor to house eight wall reliefs and two floor works, along with maps of his ranches south of Marfa, naming it his Ranch Office. To the top of the façade of the Ranch Office, Judd added “AdeC,” the brand for his ranch Ayala de Chinati, and the number 76, referring to the year he purchased his first six sections of land. Within the space he hung maps of the 35,000-thousand-acre ranch and used the building to store saddles, ropes, and ranch documents. In the work pictured here, the ring in the relief is the edge of a steel clamp with a small closing mechanism from a fiberboard barrel. The one-inch recess in the center of the work is related to the width of the metal. This work is related to the others installed within the Ranch Office that employ specific ratios and proportions, to determine placement of the found object selected by Judd.
