“I think no dealer, and certainly no museum, would provide the space and most of the money to construct the large plywood piece of mine that was recently in the gallery on Greene Street. For there to be serious art these things have to be done.” In September 1981, an exhibition of a single work by Donald Judd opened at Leo Castelli Gallery on Greene Street in New York. Requiring a six-week installation period overseen by the work’s fabricator, Peter Ballantine, the untitled work measured twelve feet high by eighty feet long. Constructed in Douglas fir plywood the work consists of ten contiguous columns, each with three rows. While Judd began making objects from unpainted plywood in the early 1970s, this work is the largest single plywood construction Judd ever made. In 2020, in conjunction with the Donald Judd retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the work was exhibited at Gagosian at its 21st Street location in New York.
