6 Afghan’s died crossing the channel yesterday. I am tired, to the depths of my soul, of the way the government and certain corners of the media try to push the gentle language of “political differences” on us when we’re discussing actual real human suffering. People are dying. People are dying in the most horrific of ways and if you point out that certain governments and their policies are designed so that people dying in horrible ways is the inevitable outcome, you’re told “political differences, everyone has a difference of opinion, it would be boring if we didn’t!” And I’m just wondering at what point we are going to actually be serious for even an iota of a moment and recognise that that is the most odious and insidious noise? We don’t disagree with your goddamn politics. We are so far beyond political disagreement it’s not actually even funny anymore. People are dying for a chance at life and you’re putting the ones that survive into floating prisons you can’t even be bothered to confirm are actually safe to be in before you lock them up in there. This isn’t about politics, we fundamentally disagree on what it means to be human. This isn’t a political issue. The treatment of the vulnerable by this government is a humanitarian issue, in that they are completely devoid of any humanity. Because all of this is a choice. All of it. They talk like it’s unpreventable tragedy but it’s not. They choose how to treat people in need, and every single time they choose hostility and aggression and a total lack of empathy or basic human decency. It is a choice they make over and over again. It’s a difference of humanity.
