Swipe for rainbows. Artist and MacDowell Fellow @theofficialsydneyacosta / Sydney Acosta (22) really did see a double rainbow during her MacDowell residency, and she painted one too. “Rainbow” (oil on canvas, 72 x 84 in.) appears in 𝘍𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘚𝘰𝘯𝘨, the artist’s solo show at @kristinakitegallery, in addition to several charcoal and pastel drawings she created at MacDowell last year, each one somehow mystical and tactile. “You can’t make work like this and keep your hands clean,” Olivia Mole / @bestguesslegs writes in the exhibition essay. “The body gets indexed all over the paintings–brush gestures, finger painting, smudging–and the paintings get all over the body, in the making and in the viewing. To look at them puts you in the density of your physiological being, makes you want to touch or be touched, to breathe, walk, eat, f*ck, to draw.” 1. The exhibition is on view through August 19. At the close of her residency, Sydney wrote, “The POC focused community of my stay was very nurturing and necessary. The privacy / remoteness of my studio helped my ideas come to life. Being here gave me a lot of insight into how fruitful residencies can be. The overlap I had with writers and an art historian moved my work in a direction that I needed but didn't know I needed.
