Working in Eastman Studio last winter, artist and MacDowell Fellow @DonteKHayes (23) used our kiln to explore new sculptural forms using porcelain, a material he had recently brought into to his practice. Over the course of his four weeks at MacDowell, the artist’s output included five new sculptures that would debut in IN CONVERSATION this summer, a group exhibition in Chautauqua Institution / @chq1874’s @chq.art galleries. Selected for his “minimal approach to composition and color, with a focus on texture, time, and weight,” explained the show’s curators, @diamond_erika and @judybarie, Donté‘s works became part of “a visual dialogue informed by… mathematics, cultural histories, architecture, and the mysteries of the natural world” in the exhibition. Interrogating the concept of artifacts, Donté creates his sculptures by carving into their surfaces, creating textured, inverted vessels, he explains, that are “informed by researching traditional African heirlooms and initiation rites of birth, adulthood, marriage, eldership, and ancestry which are essential to all human growth and speaks to the greater African diaspora.” Joining Donté “𝘐𝘯 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯” were artists @eliza_au, @karlyn_sutherland, @gabebrownstudio, @mollyhatchstudio, and @ariellezamoraart. #DontéKHayes is pictured in the first image in MacDowell’s #EastmanStudio in February 2023 (by @josiesphoto).
