Author and MacDowell Fellow Kim Coleman Foote (19) celebrated her MacDowell-supported debut novel at @Center4Fiction with none other than actress and publisher @sarahjessicaparker and author @meccajamilah in attendance – and a reading from the book about a group of young cousins planning to murder their grandmother. Inspired by her family settling in New Jersey during the great migration, Kim’s COLEMAN HILL (@sjplit / @zandoprojects) is a collection of linked stories based on accounts shared by relatives, including her mother, who was not only in the audience, but the source of the murder-plotting-cousins story, a version of which the author published in @themissourireview in Fall 2017. Relying on history, biography, and myth, the novel is a biomythography, a genre created by poet Audre Lorde (MF 79, 83) for her own MacDowell-supported, autobiographical work, ZAMI: A New Spelling of My Name. Called “a masterpiece,” by @asgreer (MF 8x 01-18), and “a brilliance that stops the breath,” by @jacqueline_woodson (MF 4x 90-09), COLEMAN HILL was longlisted for the Center for Fiction’s 2023 First Novel Prize. “Gripping, poetic, and with a big heart, it’s a memorable work of grim determination and surprising optimism,” raved Publishers Weekly in a starred review. “This is book club gold.” Kim appears in the first image with @sjplit publisher Sarah Jessica Parker at the Center for Fiction (SJP Lit photo).
