The PELVIC FLOOR MUSCLES (PFMs) are skeletal muscles like every other muscle in our body. They therefore can develop the same type of dysfunction as other muscles (think your bicep or hamstring). Despite this, however, there are quite a few characteristics that make these muscles UNIQUELY different. Read our short list below as to what these are! 1. The PFMs are "The Great Deceiver." Why? These muscles have referral patterns to other areas of the body. Translation: people suffering with hypertonic PFMs often feel pain elsewhere (hips, back, bladder or prostate). This can be very confusing for both the patient and practitioner. ✨Lesson 1: Learn the referral patterns of the PFMs* 2. The PFMs sit at the crossroads of the body. The job of the Pelvic girdle as a whole is to attenuate forces coming from the ground up through the legs & the top down through the trunk/spine. In order to do this effectively, everything must be balanced in and around the pelvis. ✨Lesson 2: Keep your PFMs healthy and strong!* 3. The PFMs are governed by the autonomic nervous system. Hence, the more time we spend in sympathetic nervous system overdrive (fight or flight), the more active and dysfunctional the PMs can become. ✨Lesson 3: Calm your nervous system daily. Your PFMs will thank you! 4. We know that muscle properties can change in the presence of inflammation. Because the PFMs have such an intimate relationship with the pelvic organs, when an inflammatory response happens with the bladder, bowel, uterus or prostate this can help set the stage for the PFMs to react. Note: Inflammation is also created any time you cut/ have surgery. In a perfect world, pelvic floor PRE-HAB should occur BEFORE and AFTER all pelvic surgeries!! ✨Lesson 4: Be your own best advocate - find a pelvic floor PT if you have an inflammatory process in place. #pelvicfloor #pelvicstability #pelvichealth #pelvicpain #pelvicfloorphysicaltherapy #pelvicfloorpt #pelvicfloorhealth #pelvicfloorphysio #pelvicfloortherapy #pelvicfloormuscles #pelvicfloordysfunction #hypertonicpelvicfloor #autonomicnervoussystem #pelvicrehab #prostate #lowbackpain #bladderpain #hippain #pelvicgirdle #menshealth
