How many of these 🚩red flag🚩 phrases have you heard before? ⤵️ (let us know in the comments) • • • 🚩 “Your baby doesn't have a tongue tie…see? She can stick out her tongue!” 🚩 “There's a slight/mild tie, but it’s not causing your issues.” 🚩 “The ties will stretch over time…or at some point, your baby will fall and break them." 🚩 “Why not just bottle feed if you’re having so much trouble?” 🚩 “Weight gain is good, so there's no reason to release the ties." 🚩 “Are you sure you want to release them? You would have to use general anesthesia." If your pediatrician, ENT, LC, or SLP (or any other provider!) has said one or more of these things to you, it may mean they lack training about Tethered Oral Tissues, or TOTs AKA tongue, lip,and buccal ties. Unfortunately, not all providers have equal training! Believe it or not, the basic course work to become a medical doctor, lactation consultant, and Speech and Language Pathologist, contains scarcely little about oral ties. (And this says nothing of the fact that in medical schools, doctors may receive as little as 0-3 hours in lactation-specific education, never mind more complex feeding challenges such as TOTs!) Being able to assess for TOTs is a specialized set of skills that a provider must seek out additional, continuing professional education to cultivate. TOTs-savvy providers often spend countless, unpaid hours being mentored by other professionals as well. So if your provider has told you any of the above, but your gut is telling you something isn’t quite right, it may be time to seek out a second opinion!
