40 Years (Part 2) This photo shows Nurensdorf, the village in which I grew up, in 1983, 40 years ago. My mother moved there with me in 1970, when I was six years old, after my parents’ divorce. Nurensdorf and the surrounding villages that were part of the commune had a total of only 1500 inhabitants at the time. I formed Hellhammer with bassist Steve Warrior in Nurensdorf in May 1982, a year before this photo was taken. And on 31 May 1984, Martin Eric Ain and I formed Celtic Frost there, in my childhood bedroom. The photo is noteworthy because it captures the village in the very year Hellhammer recorded the band's three demos, Death Fiend, Triumph Of Death (both June 1983), and Satanic Rites (December 1983). Also visible is the old farmhouse in which I wrote the music and lyrics for these demos (no. 1 in the annotated photo enlargement). Moreover, the location of Hellhammer's practice space, the musty Grave Hill bunker, can be seen in the background, in the neighbouring village of Birchwil (no. 2). This is where we recorded the songs featured on Death Fiend and Triumph Of Death and where we spent uncounted hours rehearsing and playing private underground concerts for a small handful of friends. This rehearsal room would subsequently also become Celtic Frost's basis. By the time this photo was taken in 1983, Nurensdorf had expanded by about a third from what it had been in 1970, and many fields and orchards which had been the settings of numerous exploits in my youth, were now streets and houses.
