TEFAF is happy to announce the acquisition of Frederic Lord Leighton’s “Study for Flaming June,” presented at TEFAF Maastricht 2023 by @Gallery19C. The painting was acquired by a private collector and is now on permanent loan to @LeightonSambourneMuseums. At the end of his career in 1895, Leighton created “Flaming June,” one of his most well-known paintings. Before transferring his ideas to a full-scale canvas, the artist tested the effect of color and atmosphere in this small oil sketch. His creative process is well documented in this study: beginning with an idea, then developing the pose, format, and composition through careful studies of a live model. Leighton’s refined technique, traditional process, and intellectual subject matter set him apart from many of his contemporaries, and yet his commitment to the ideal of “art for art’s sake” and pursuit of beauty as the true value in art align him with some of the most progressive artists of the period.
