TEFAF is proud to announce the acquisition by the @CincyArtMuseum of the “Portrait of the Painter Karl Friedrich Lessing” by Rudolf Julius Benno Hübner —presented by @AntonacciLapiccirellaFineArt during TEFAF Maastricht 2023. The acquisition is the museum’s first portrait of the sitter, Karl Friedrich Lessing, of substantial importance to the museum’s collection including over 800 drawings by him. The outstanding quality reveals a psychological insight to the portrait, which is rendered with great intensity through the deep gaze, highlighted by minute shadowing beneath the right eye and the various reflections of vibrant light surrounding it. The painting is dated to around 1839, when Hübner after several years of working under the Polish diplomat Count Atanazy Raczyńsky accepted a post at the Dresden Art Academy, the artist could now allow himself to paint more diverse and abandon the biblical subjects that he was mainly commissioned for. Now, the artist made a reputation for himself depicting Germanic sagas and fairy tales, as well as his friends and colleagues, possibly this was the motive for the creation of his exceptional portrait of Lessing.
