Presented by @GalleriaBerardi at TEFAF Maastricht 2023, TEFAF is proud to announce that “Portrait of Pan Yuliang” by Umberto Coromaldi has been acquired by @UffiziGalleries. One of the most important Chinese artists of the 20th century, Pan Yuliang produced remarkable works that have inspired artists to this day. Renowned for her self-portraits and nudes of non-Western women, the artist has played a significant role in the intersection of Western and Eastern Modern art. At the age of 18, Pan had spent her childhood orphaned and later sold to a brothel where she would meet Pan Zanhua, a customs official who ransomed the young girl and enabled her to study in Shanghai. Graduating as one of the first women from the Western Art Department at the Shanghai Art Academy, French Impressionism had a strong appeal to the artist and would later lead her to study in Paris and Rome. During her years spent in Italy, Pan was a pupil of Umberto Coromaldi who made this portrait of his student.
