At TEFAF Maastricht 2023 @GalerieKarstenGreve presented French artist Jean Dubuffet’s “Intervention” amongst a selection of works by some of the most pioneering masters of the 20th century. Challenging conventional ideas of beauty, Dubuffet launched a new approach to subject matter and technique through his art. Art Brut, often described as art produced by those who do not work within the conventional structures of art production, enabled the artist to step outside of traditional boundaries. Incorporating dirt, grit, soil, and sand into his paints, Dubuffet introduced—quite literally—the everyday into his creations in an attempt to link art and life. In “Intervention,” the artist has depicted a grotesque figure that leans towards the viewer and confronts the gaze. Avoiding three-dimensional perspective, the body is compressed within the picture plane, creating a sense of imprisonment and oppression. By distorting the features and exaggerating the proportions Dubuffet depersonalizes his figures, questioning cultural standards of beauty.
