Homemade Vanilla Extract FAQs. I’m not sure how vanilla became synonymous with ordinariness? There’s nothing boring about it. In fact, it’s one of my favorite ingredients. Vanilla adds a subtle background note, like a perfect perfume. In my recipe repertoire vanilla is rarely the starring ingredient but when it’s missing things go a bit lackluster. I’ve been making my own vanilla extract since I was in culinary school in 1996. I have many bottles going and give them as gifts.
