What causes ingrown toenails? You may have been told they come from how you cut your nails—that you should always cut your nails flat across and never with any curvature, but the reality is ingrown toenails are almost universally caused by footwear. Most babies are born with the widest part of the foot being the ends of their toes. By about age 2 or 3, most kids' shoes start looking like adult shoes and are widest at the ball of the foot, tapering in the toe box. This kind of footwear pinches the toes together into an unnatural position. This becomes even more complicated as kids' feet grow longer and wider into shoes that are too small for their feet. Shoes will actually cause a change in the nail's architecture which results in the nail beginning to dig down into the flesh. This can happen on both sides of the nail as the toes are pressured by the shoe's upper and the adjacent toe. If you're struggling with ingrown toenails, check your shoes first!
