45% of my clients couldn’t lose weight, despite being in a calculated calorie deficit. ⬇️ When I became a Dietitian, I really had no idea that you could be insulin resistant without being diabetic. Initially, when I opened my private practice, I was a macro coach because I was taught in school that this was the best method to help people lose weight. I was helping clients create a calorie deficit in their diet and encouraging exercise. However, after about 6 months, I became completely frustrated because approximately 45% of my clients couldn't lose weight, even though they were in a calculated calorie deficit. I felt that the method of counting macros was unsustainable, and I noticed that most people weren't consistent enough to sustain results. During this time, one of my clients was diagnosed with sleep apnea, and when I dived into my medical nutrition therapy book, I repeatedly came across the term "insulin resistance." After discussing it with my client, we both agreed that she might be insulin resistant, so we tried a diet focused on reversing it. This experience inspired me to get my labs checked, and I discovered that I had hormone imbalances and was borderline insulin resistant myself. I'm excited to say that my client has now lost 95 pounds,(shout out to @deannaferello91) and I have successfully reversed my hormone imbalances. Having experienced so much success with focusing on blood sugar balance, I decided to use social media to raise awareness about insulin resistance.
